One item that was not really debated on the Blackboard is the 6" rule.
We saw some pupils getting punished for breaking the rule.
Kathryn McGeough apparently said it was a good idea especially with the hot weather and lack of showers pupils did not really want to get closer than six inches.
It has also been pointed out that the six inch rule helped with concentration on school work.
How often did the pupils manage to break the 6" rule in reality I wonder?
Also do you think co-ed a good thing or was the seperation of sexes better for pupils.

The 6" rule was really a way of keeping the girls and boys apart. In the 1950’s it would be most likely that you went to a single sex school anyway so there would have been no need for this rule in general.
It was interesting that Joe and Harriet said the rule was good as they got to know each other better rather than having just a physical relationship.

I remember thinking that was an interesting comment.
Mind you, with the BO problem everyone seemed to be having, maybe the 6" rule was welcomed!
Any comment from the Teachem stars?

I thought that Harriet and Joe saying that they got to know each other better because of the 6 inch rule was an interesting point too. As Margaret comments though, with the hot weather and BO problem I wonder if anyone would have got all that close even without the 6 inch rule.......?
The school my Dad went to in the 1950s was all boys, but there was a girls' school only a few yards down the road and they were so strict on not wanting boys and girls to meet that they made the start and finish times of these schools be 15 minutes apart. Of course people still got round it but it just shows how keen the teachers were to prevent any contact between boys and girls.

A thought crossed my mind seeing you visiting Harriet on That Taught 'em was how did it feel to be joining the upper classes ? Did you find it easy or a bit daunting? I would guess that Harriet does not have too many airs and graces and is quite down to earth in some respects.

In the That'll Teachem series which was portraying a typical boarding school from the 1950's it was a rule a boy and a girl should always keep their bodies six inches apart.
In that way they could not kiss or hug or do anything else which would be considered intimate.
In that era if there was a school dance for example you were expected to be able to see daylight between the partners bodies so smooching around the dance floor together for example was banned.
